Outpatient services are a critical part of planned care, but many traditional models are no longer fit for purpose. Independent providers are helping the NHS redesign how patients are assessed, reviewed and followed up, offering services that are faster, more efficient and more responsive to patient needs.

This award is for providers delivering outpatient care to NHS patients that improves flow, speeds up access or offers a better experience for patients. This could include assessment and follow up clinics in specialties such as dermatology, ophthalmology, gynaecology, MSK or chronic pain, as well as virtual review services or patient initiated follow up pathways.

Eligibility

  • Open to independent healthcare providers delivering outpatient services free at the point of care to NHS patients.
  • Projects can be conducted independently or in collaboration with an NHS organisation. While a partnership with the NHS is encouraged, it is not mandatory; however, all projects must serve NHS patients.
  • Evidence of measurable impact must be provided from the past two years up until the awards entry deadline.

Ambition

The challenge and context within which your project, person or organisation is set alongside your goals and targets whether quantitative or qualitative, and how this aligns with national priorities.

  • Explain which part of the outpatient pathway your service improves, such as assessment, follow-up or review, and be specific about the patient group.
  •  Describe how the model increases capacity, speeds up access or reduces unnecessary appointments.
  • Set out how the approach aligns with NHS ambitions to modernise elective and outpatient care.

Collaboration

The stakeholders’ involvement in co-designing and delivering the project. How have patients, staff at all levels, communities and other parties worked together to realise the outcomes?

  • Describe how the service was developed with input from clinicians, managers and operational teams.
  • Highlight patient involvement in shaping access models, communication or support tools.
  • Explain how you work with NHS trusts, ICBs or other partners to extend access.

Impact

The measurable benefits delivered to patients, staff, your organisation or the wider system. Provide data and evidence showing improvements to outcomes, quality, access, equity or efficiency.

  • Provide evidence of reduced waiting times, lower non-attendance or faster diagnosis.
  • Share measurable improvements in patient outcomes, flow or treatment planning.
  • Include feedback from patients, referring clinicians or NHS partners.

Scale

How your work has been shared, adopted or replicated beyond your immediate team or organisation. This includes dissemination through publications, presentations, toolkits, partnerships or inspiring similar initiatives elsewhere.

  • Highlight where your model has been adopted by other teams, specialties or geographies.
  • Share tools, systems or service designs that have enabled scale or adaptation.

Sustainability

The potential for the project/work to continue and create lasting impact. Evidence of how it can be sustained or built upon.

  • Show how the service reduced delays and created additional clinical capacity that endures.
  •  Explain how you gather and respond to feedback to improve and sustain quality.
